I absolutely love the Champions League.
It’s my favourite sporting competition in the world because it simply delivers, every single season. I only watched 20 minutes of Roma’s incredible victory over Barcelona last season, for instance, but I’m not sure I’ll ever forget Manolas heading in from that corner (full article, written shortly after I completely freaked out, here).
We’ve already seen some cracking moments in the 2019 Champions League, and more will surely come from a cracking final bunch of fixtures in the Round of 16.
Coming off two strong weeks of Premier League picks, I’ve got a full set of Champions League betting tips for you this week. These include match result, goalscorers, and more.
As a quick reminder, our four Champions League fixtures this week are:
- Manchester City vs Schalke
- Juventus vs Atletico Madrid
- Bayern Munich vs Liverpool
- Barcelona vs Lyon
If you’re new to Champions League betting, you can find a full explanation of betting terminology here.

Champions League Betting Predictions
We’ve got four ties remaining in the Round of 16, with two of those definitely still hanging in the balance.
Here are my Champions League predictions for what’s about to unfold.
Man City vs Schalke
Aggregate Score: 3-2
Match Result Prediction: Man City Win
To Progress: Man City
I was watching the Atletico game as the madness of the first leg unfolded. Even following it via BT Sport’s live updates, it seemed a ludicrous game of football.
Fair play to Schalke for having a crack, but there’s only one outcome here. There’s no way Schalke are outscoring City enough to get by them.
Man City are 1/8 to win the match, which certainly isn’t worth it, and they’re a ridiculous 1/200 to qualify. Obviously we can’t go near those.
Schalke are 22/1 to win, and 25/1 to qualify. Neither are likely to happen, but – given City’s underwhelming record in the competition – I actually don’t mind the 25/1 odds for a small flyer.
You can get better odds by simply betting on there being plenty of goals. The Over 2.5 Goals is 4/11, BTTS is 11/10, and Man City to Win and BTTS is 6/4.
You can also get solid odds by betting on Anytime Goalscorers. If I were to write a comprehensive Champions League betting guide, one of my biggest tips would be not to bet big on goalscorers! Still, they’re fun for a small stake. In this game, you can get Aguero at 8/15, Sterling at 4/5 or Sane at 21/20. Of those, the best value is Sane to score against his old team once more .
Juventus vs Atletico Madrid
Aggregate Score: 0-2
Match Result Prediction: Draw
To Progress: Atletico Madrid
The first leg was a fascinating game of football, and – given that Atleti are my side bae – I was delighted by the result.

Atletico are actually my pick to become Champions League winners this season, so obviously I’m taking them to progress here. They’re currently third-favourites in the Champions League winner odds, at 8/1, behind Man City and Barcelona, and I’d back Atleti against either of those teams.
Atleti are heavy favourites to get through the Round of 16, at 2/7. Juventus’s odds of 5/2 actually offer decent value, but I really think Madrid finish the job here.
Everyone knows that Altetico will play this one extremely defensively, and only try to score on counter-attacks and from set pieces, as they generally did in the first leg. I could certainly see them getting another clean sheet, making the BTTS No at 7/10 pretty tempting. The Under 2.5 Goals, at 4/6, is probably a safer bet though.
The two big names to consider for Anytime Goalscorer are obviously Cristiano Ronaldo and Antoine Griezmann. Neither scored in the first leg, but both are having typically excellent seasons. Ronaldo to Score Anytime is 10/11, and Griezmann to Score Anytime is 5/2. I slightly prefer the value of Griezmann, who’s lethal on the counter… but Ronaldo is the greatest Champions League player ever (and I’ve already put a big bet on him to score here).
Morata at 5/2 is also tempting – he had one disallowed in the first leg, and has looked good recently – and Saul at 12/1 is my shout for a flyer.
Bayern Munich vs Liverpool
Aggregate Score: 0-0
Match Result Prediction: Bayern Munich Win
To Progress: Bayern Munich
This is comfortably the hardest tie to predict. In my Champions League predictions prior to the first legs, I was confident that Liverpool would go through. After they got nothing at Anfield, though, I’ve been wavering.
On the one hand, Liverpool have the more recent track record of success, having gotten all the way to the final last season. On the other hand, they had a relatively easy run to get there, and Bayern obviously have the home advantage. Liverpool are also fighting a much more intensive Premier League campaign than they were last year.
Reluctantly, I’m taking Bayern Munich to Qualify at 4/5.
They’ve been demolishing the Bundesliga recently, and they’re at home. Bayern are 11/10 to Win in Regular Time, but let’s take the safer ‘To Qualify’ bet.
This is a really hard match to predict, but – if I had to do so – I’m plumping for a cagey encounter. The Under 3.5 Goals at 2/5 seems safe, though the odds obviously aren’t great, and I quite like BTTS No at 6/5 too.
The most likely Anytime Goalscorer is Lewandowski at 17/20, but Serge Gnabry – who’s been in cracking form – offers good value at 17/10.
Finally, if you’re looking for a fun flyer, both teams are 25/1 to Win in Extra Time.
Barcelona vs Lyon
Aggregate Score: 0-0
Match Result Prediction: Barcelona Win
To Progress: Barcelona
Given that Lyon conceded 11 goals in their six group stage games, and Barcelona scored 14 in theirs, this was easily one of the most surprising first leg results. Somehow, though, I don’t think Lyon will be able to hold the Catalans at the Nou Camp. Since that first leg, Barca have scored 11 goals in four games, and Lyon haven’t kept a clean a sheet.
Unsurprisingly, Barcelona are massive favourites here. They’re 2/9 to Win in Regular Time, and 1/5 to Qualify. I actually don’t mind putting a big stake on that second option, as it’s pretty much a sure thing.
If you really think Barcelona will whoop Lyon here, you could take Barcelona Over 2.5 Goals at 4/5. A safer bet, notwithstanding the mediocre odds, is the straight-up Over 2.5 Goals at 2/5.

It’s not easy to find value in the goalscorer markets here. Messi to Score Anytime is 2/5 – which is simply too low – but I do quite like Suarez to Score Anytime at 8/11. Suarez has scored in three of his last four games, and almost always gets to play a full 90 minutes.
So, that wraps up our serious look at the Champions League odds for the Round of 16. To finish off with, let’s look at a good old-fashioned, nearly-impossible accumulator!
If you were to roll all four of my Final Result Picks – Man City, Draw, Bayern Munich, Barcelona – into one Champions League accumulator, you’d get odds of 9.26/1. I wouldn’t recommend putting any kind of big stake on that… but they’re actually pretty good odds for only four selections!
Right, that just about does it for today.
Thanks for reading, everyone!
